A close intimate union, a relationship between husband and wife- As a law- contract upon a voluntary private agreement by a man and a woman to become husband and wife.( Every couple needs to make boundaries, not all the same)- A legal contract (Doesn’t remove your responsibilities) - Considered the basis of the family unit- Vital to the preservation of moral and civilizationChanges in U.S. Marriage: A Review- A colonial America- only men can inherit, economy, survival (not about romance or fulfillment)- Industrial revolution- Had love, show love by women good in home, men worked- Modern Marriage- happiness in marriage (Can be poor/rich) meets your emotional needs.Marriage Norms- Changing overtime- Purpose for marriage- Age at marriage- Gay/Lesbian marriage vs. Civil Unions- Attitudes about non marital sex- Attitudes about cohabitation- Attitudes about non marital childbearing (2 friends)- Attitudes about shared breadwinning (Wife more money)- Attitudes about the division of household labor1.
