2/19/2013 Chapter 6- Two Basic parts of communication:o Content- what you actually sayo Meaning- what you intend to say- The Importance of communication:o Communication- and interactive process that uses symbols like words and gestures to both send and receive messages It is a transaction It is a process It includes a co-construction of meanings- The cultural context of communication:o Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis- the concept that language shapes out culture, and out culture shapes out language- Types of communication:o Listening- the process of giving thoughtful attention to what we hear Five-stage model of listening process:- Receiving- hearing- Understanding- learning, meaning- Remembering- recalling and retaining- Evaluating- judging and criticizing- Responding- answering and giving feedbacko Nonverbal Communication- communicating without words, by using gestures, expressions, and body languageo Written Electronic Communication: Informality is the new norm Our writing influences our speech We have volume control over out messages We have more relationships with less depth We can live in the moment- Communicating for a strong relationship:o Self-disclosure- telling a person something private about yourself that he or she would not otherwise know- Conflict, communication, and Problem solvingo Conflict- Disagreements over decision making, problem solving, or achieving goals, which can result from differences between group numbers in personality, perception, information, tolerance for risk, and power or influence Good if it results in a resolution Five conflict styles- Power, Control, and Decision makingo Power- the ability to exercise your willo Personal power- the degree of autonomy a person has to exercise hisor her willo Social power- the ability to exercise your will over another persono Intimate partner power- a type of power that involves decision making among intimate partners, their division of labor, and their sense of entitlemento Theories of power: Resource theory- a theory of power that suggests that the spouse with the more prestigious or higher paying job can use the advantage to generate more power in the relationship and thereby influence decision making Principle of Least interest Relative love and need theory- Doing gender
