FACTS FROM GRAPHS Today majority of mothers work outside the home for pay regardless of marital status although there has been a slight declines in recent years The majority of mothers with children 0 2 or 0 6 work outside the home except among hispanic groups Although the majority of adults say that working moms are either a good thing for society or do not make much difference a sizable minority see working moms as a bad thing for society Men s share of domestic work has increased although women have most of the responsibility Fathers report and extra hour or two of leisure compared to mothers Work family conflict is common and is reported more often by men than women Mothers nowadays seem to favor part time over full time work and stay at home mothers are increasingly satisfied with their arrangement Relative and organized day care seem to be the most common ways that working parents arrange for childcare but racial and ethnic groups appear to have different preferences Childcare is expensive especially for an infant in a daycare center Despite the stereotypes to the contrary daycare centers are among the safest place Americans have come full circle on divorce Today people are likely to say either make it harder or keep it the same fewer want divorce made easier The longer the time since a divorce the more likely people are to cohabit The majority of divorced women remarry within 5 years Younger women high school graduates and women with higher incomes are most likely to remarry Whites are more likely than Blacks or Hispanics to remarry after a divorce are least likely to live with a grandparent The current recession has many older persons working longer Many people find caregiving to be highly stressful or a financial hardship although not all
