brought in so Europeans could say they were number 1 a way to show that the northern Europeans where better than everyone else If you didn t look like a northern European you were inferior Susan Phipps considered herself to be white when she went to get defined what race was first to write it down on paper prove what the most Blumenbach prominent race on the earth was decided that he was going to choose the number race based on who was the prettiest he choose the Caucasians light skin hair and eyes took his word as fact The Phipps Case married they checked her past she had a trace of African American in her past so she had to change all her documents to say she is know African American Southerners wanted to keep Africans Americans in a state of semi slavery kept whites from being associated with African Americans treated as an African American 1970 Ethnicity nationality language religion and gender roles if you had one drop of African American blood you were to be considered 1820 come to America because economic conditions were so bad in their own country they come to America to get a job and make money to support their family they come as a last resort Cuban immigrant to the o Slaves the only group that do not have push pull factor Patterns of Adaption and Adoption Assimilation begin to adopt the ways of the dominate group adopt the language adopt WASPS culture even drop religion to become more like dominant group Anglo Conformity but maintain their own identity Melting Pot or Cultural Pluralism every group gives something of their own to contribute to the group Acculturation Philosophies on Race and Ethnicity o Anglo Conformity when people form to be like the subordinate group assimilation o Melting Pot o Cultural Pluralism where everyone contains their own identity acculturation Who are the English WASPS o From England Wales Scotland o White o Anglo Saxon migrated to England and ruled for 700 years are looked back to as where English culture begins o Protestant 99 of people that came in the formative wave were protestants o Protestant revolution swept through Europe in 1517 in Germany it was a protest against the hierarchy of the catholic church believed you didn t need a priest to talk to God for you it continued until Henry the VIII became King o King Henry VIII Wanted a divorce so he could marry his mistress went to the pope but he wouldn t allow him to get a divorce Made his own church the church of England so he could get a divorce believed that any one can talk to God you don t need a priest2 o Protestant became the official religion of England the church of England o English look to the Anglo Saxon as being their ancestors o 1529 England becomes a Protestant country o All the wars were between England and Catholic countries Other colonial Ventures o Dominant force in North America o French trading empire o Dutch trading empire o Spanish Three Great Migrations o 1 st Migration 169 1640 trading empire made money in gold mines undertaken by the puritans or the pilgrims leave England and settle in Massachusetts New England o 2 nd Migration 1641 1672 leave England and settle in Virginia o 3 rd Migration 1675 1725 undertaken by the Quakers leave form England and go to Pennsylvania o By 1700 200 000 Englishmen had migrated 1 st Great Migration o Most of the puritans came from east Anglia o Immigrated to get away from religious repression immigrated voluntarily o Puritans want to get rid of all remnants of Catholicism from the church o 1st group of puritans called the separated group of puritans Believed the church of England was past saving believe to break away from church of England and make their own church in America These are the Pilgrims o 2nd group non separated puritans Stay with the church of England and establish one in America as how they think it should look in hope to make the church of England in England fall to reform o Most to go
