Study Guide for MidtermAMH 2097 – Fall 2012RobbinsBasic Information:The exam is Tuesday, October 9, 2012, in our classroom during class time.***Please Bring a PENCIL for the scan-tron portion of the exam***Please come on time. I will NOT ALLOW any student to begin taking an exam once the first student turns in their exam. I will not allow a makeup for tardiness. The material covered for the exam will be all lectures through Thursday, October 4th (Chinese). The groups/ideas included for this exam are the Introduction to Race, Ethnicity and Nationality and the History of Immigration, WASPs, Africans, African-Americans, and Irish.The films you will be responsible for are: Roots and Gangs of New York. You will also be responsible for the film/clips seen in class and also the political cartoons posted on Blackboard for the Irish.The exam will consist of:58 Multiple Choice/Matching Questions (1.5 points each – 87 points total)13 Short Answer/Listing Questions (1 point each – 13 points total)Total: 100 points***Please keep time in mind when completing the exam. (determined by other people)Racism: take physical characteristics and believe they are inferior than you.Definition of Ethnic Group or Ethnicity: a group of people that have something in common, Nativism: Dislike of someone different from you.Definition of Nationality: Where you were born. “THE OTHER”: Anyone different from those in power.Racial and Ethnic HierarchiesThree Movements (Waves) of Immigration Formative Wave: 1607-1830 during which Jews, Italians, Irish, Germans came.First Wave: Irish, Germans and Chinese came.Second Wave: Russians, Jews, Central/Eastern Europeans came.Assimilation: Give up your past and accept the future. (Ideal)Acculturation Adapt some new culture but keep some past culture. (Reality)"Un-Assimilate-able": Those that are never able to fit in. Anglo-Conformity: Complete assimilation into conforming to the English person. Xenophobia: Irrational fear of the other. Cultural Pluralism: Accepting of different groups. The Use of Film in History: Helped shape American values/behavior. Helped form self-image. Key cultural artifact that offers insight into culture and social history.
