Race and Ethnicity in the U S 10 24 Progressive Era America P E A Social economic and political reform 1880s to 1920s some say 1930s The beginning of Modern America the things we still see today People are trying to improve their communities Characteristics in the beginning o In 1820 most people did not live in cities o Factories are exploding everywhere o Public sanitation is limited raw sewage is a problem in the streets o Horses and carriage are still primary transportation o Children are still working many hours a week Largely a white middle class movement to improve the lives of those they thought needed their help o Cultures are taking what they want and discarding the rest Called Progressives for their complete devotion to what they thought was progress out with the old in with the new attitude Largely started as a local and primitive volunteer associations became state and federal into the 20th century Some Famous PEA Accomplishments The income tax 16th amendment in 1913 Prohibition 18th Amendment in 1919 o There is the argument that alcohol hurts the American family o Prohibition no happy hour unhappy college students o Repealed in 1933 o Starts a new trend that limits what people can do Women s suffrage 19th amendment in 1920 Some PEA Ideas Muckrakers All things Modern Municipal reform o People that are seeking out political corruption and trying to end it o Science and technology better everything o Improving situations for Families Example making shorter work weeks o Pure food and drug act of 1906 Federal regulation for meat and dairy You start to see warning labels and whatnot Standardization o American Medical Association o Regulations for professional jobs college o Lots of unintended consequences Example making sure all doctors have a PhD from a legitimate People who have been practicing medicine for years are fired Wealthy white men start to take over this sector because they have the time and money to go to school Famous PEA Jane Adams o Remembered for settlement houses and organizing women o Tried to give them better access to health care legal representation education Gifford Pinchot o Arguing conservation o National park services o First chief of the U S forest service Upton Sinclair o Wrote The Jungle o About the meat industry o Hamburger meat is really lots of miscellaneous things hair brains band aid etc Alice Paul o One of the 20th century s most interesting suffragists o She is put into an insane asylum o She was released Civilization Obsessed with this idea of civilized What do you need to be a civilized nation Often understood in comparisons Race ethnicity played a large part When did this discussion of civilization start Charles Wilkes 1838 Charles Peale 1822 Civilization in the PEA Chicago World s Fair in 1893 o Crazy crazy crazy event o They want to display how the U S has developed since Columbus o Very first Ferris wheel o First zipper is introduced o Aunt Jemima syrup o Juicy fruit gum o Cream of wheat o The White City Chicago All buildings are white Everything is white They want to display all of the different races and ethnicities Egyptian building has belly dancers Chinese building has a small pool of water with an Asian looking person catching the same fish over and over again They have a tent come see what its like to go to an African American Church someone comes and does a spiritual revival in the African American style To Civilize and Evangelize o Ex Praying instead of taking antibiotics if you are sick o An international effort Great Britain Germany France Canada America China parts of Africa Colonialism and Imperialism o White mans Burden It is our responsibilities to bring these things from our countries to other countries o The Mad Scramble for Africa Phrase people use when they talk about how people are trying to colonize and occupy different parts of Africa
