Wanted a divorce Catholics were not allowed divorce So he changed English to protestant Become a target for retribution of Catholics that surround him Launched an invasion to capture and hold Ireland for years to help protect their Western border from catholic invasion Start colonizing Ireland Changing the entire countryside of Ireland they cut the trees built new towns enclosed areas Completely canged the landscape The Penal Laws Catholics and Protestants were not allowed to marry If a catholic priest married a catholic and protestant he could be sentenced to death Irish were not allowed weapons Irish were excluded completely from the professional occupations Where made to disenfranchise the Irish No Irish could become a lawyer or a judge Poppry Act If the oldest son in the family converted to Protestantism he could inherit his entire families land New catholic churches had to be made of wood and not stone and they could not be built near main roads or cities Catholics under the Penal Laws cant vote Can t run for office Can t be educated if caught attending school were sent to the west Indies Add to the growth of Poverty The Growth of Poverty In 1600 Protestants owned 10 of the land By 1798 the Protestants owned 95 of the land In 1837 the Irish conducted a survey of a county with 9000 people the county had 10 beds and 93 chairs Some suggested that the Irish were worse
