Tenements- standard multi-family dwelling, usually an old building where more than three separate families, or two families per floor live. Mostly the Jewish in NYC. Women aren’t supposed to be with people outside their faith and tenements helped to keep them with other Jews. Jews weren’t interested in faming anyways.Leo Frank- Jewish American convicted of murdering a 13 year old girl who was his coworker at a pencil factory, last one to see her alive. Convicted and sentenced todeath but after outrage they reconsidered to life in prison. Kidnapped by 25 armed men and taken by the 13 year olds home and lynched. People stomped on his face, ripped off pieces of his shirt and bit of the rope used to hang him. Orthodox Judaism- Reform Jews- Follow the Torah/Talmund strictly – dress ass the Torah tells them, Kosher only eating certain meats and meats butchered under a certain type of rabbi, spoke Yiddish so that only they could understand each other, will not switch their Sabbath dayConservative Judaism- Will move their Sabbath Day, Willing to change dress and some of their worship practices but most stayed the sameYiddish- Jewish language, Hebrew in writing, Yiddish theaters and radio stations, etc, Costa George Najour- 23 years old, petitioned US government for citizenship, argued with him that he was neither white nor African American, courts sided with him saying that Syrian was white. Syrians worked hard to be seen as white. Najour became economically successful and published many books Silk- Lebanese peasants became very rich, planted more Mulberry trees for silk worms to eat, silk supply went up, demand and price went down, peasants were able to afford luxuries, bought sugar, coffee, clothes, and furniture with their money, Lebanese women stopped marrying cousins to keep assets in the familyPeddling- Lebanese who sold household and religious items door-to-door, welcomed into people’s homes because it was possibly the only person they saw all week, this helped them be accepted into the American culture, made a lot of money even by US standards 1790 Naturalization Act- Only free white persons could become US CitizensEspionage Act- Prohibited spying or interfering with military draft or making critical statements of the armySedition Act- Made it illegal to criticize the American government, found over 2000 people guilty Red Scare- A back lash against communist and socialist views, Hundreds of immigrant radicals were deported because of this Emma Goldman- Jewish/ Russian born anarchist, famous proactive speaker who focused on birth control, self-expression, premarital sex, and gay/lesbian rights, deported because of her viewsKu Klux Klan- Reappeared in the 1920’s to target Jews, Catholics, Blacks, immigrants, and union workers, were successfully active in the whole country in the 1920’s with 3 million members Great Migration- the movement of millions of blacks to the north, bad working conditions and racism forced them north and got industrial jobsJohnson-Reed Act- limited migration to 150,000 people per year, only 2% of how many people from that country that lived in America in1890 were allowed to come per year. Priority given to relatives to people already in America or people with special skills, Migration from Asia, Africa and the middle east were banned Sacco and Vanzetti- Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeu Vanzetti were accused for taking part in a bank robbery where a security guard was killed, country was outraged, once they were sentenced to the death penalty protests broke out in Europe and America, in August of 1927 they were executed for a crime they likely didn’t commit, example of the red scareElla May Wiggins- textile worker in Stumptown, North Carolina, made $9 a week working 6 days a week, 12 hours a day. Single mother of 9- 4 deceased, murdered in broad daylight by 5 men/guards. Murdered for attending a strike at a nearby millAmerican Communist Party- Alfred Smith- 1928 Presidential election against Herbert Hoover, born in poverty as the son of Irish immigrants, 4 time governor of NY, Democrat, anti-prohibition,Cactholic, After the triangle fire, he became a supporter of social legislation, Established widows rights, and advocated for an end to the red scarePauli Murray- arrested for refusing a white person a seat on a bus, non-violent resistance, studied law at Howard university (all black) even though she had a scholarship to Harvard because they didn’t admit women, 1943 sit-downs: blacks weren’t allowd to be served at restaurants so they sat down with books and read as protest. Later were able to be served as a result. Barbara Johns- at 16, staged a strike with classmates against segregation in schools in Virginia. 1955 Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education, court ruled against “separate but equal”, family was harassed and forced to move awayRecy Taylor- in Alabama, walking home from church when kidnapped by six white men then brutally raped, case was tried with none of the men involved, dismissedin 5 minutes, 4 men said she was a prostitute, 1 plead no involvement, and 1 said they were looking for someone to kidnap and she was the first one they found, the driver paid the cops $200 to not go to jail.
