characteristics with inferiority or internal character Cultural construction historical invention System of dividing population political undertones for power and o Racism taking physical characteristics that you assumed and claiming that money Not biological they are inferior or superior to them Segregation similar culture experience Has to do with shared values o Ethnicity definition of ethnic group or ethnicity group of people who share a Religion language traditions ancestors Does not deal with where you re from The government pushes people into ethnicities o Nativism idea that somebody is inferior or superior because of his or her o Individuals get to choose their ethnicity ethnicity Problems Problems arise when they migrate to another country without the same ethnicity o Nationality place of your birth Problems We now claim your nationality is based on your citizenship what passport you had Where your parents are from and you may associate yourself more with them Being born on a military base What does the US do with this info o Racial and ethnic hierarchies Who comes why and what happens o Waves of Immigration Based on how much you look act and your cultures act like the dominant group Move all the time when other groups come and bump other groups up or when groups do something wrong Every country has one Creation of the other people who aren t like you you physically separate yourself from them We don t have power government does Formative Largest English don t consider themselves immigrants Colonization forming the country and customs Call Cubans China India continent of Africa Why do immigrants leave their country o Most don t want to leave and come to the US o They HAVE to because Government changes Destruction of their homes from natural disasters Political problems dictators War Religion Famine No clean water Criminals Political rights Education women Why do immigrants come to the US o Most people s last resort but we accept immigrants o We don t treat them very well o We have Better job opportunities Freedoms Education Access to medical treatment Land First groups of people were after land Money Public services o Assimilation barriers Language Homesick Appearance Food Surrounded by people like you Government isn t welcoming Money Older Jobs and education opportunities Have a close culture to them Marry someone Location Government is welcoming Know language Pop culture o Assimilation quicker How immigrants fit in o Assimilation when you give up your entire culture and become the new culture you immigrate into Hard and individual s decision Anglo Conformity change and join to become an English individual WASP White Anglo Saxon Protestant Conform to the basic idea of America Xenophobia fear of immigrants start losing money and power to immigrants immigrants might vote against the majority Fear is unfounded The more xenophobia the more immigrants don t want to assimilate o We want all immigrants to assimilate but not all do Sometimes takes a whole lifetime to or goes onto next generation o Acculturation enemy of assimilation Keeping certain things about your culture but keeping them on the down low Show your assimilation outside and when you go home you practice your culture Cultural Pluralism we like the idea we are different from other cultures We like that people are different because of immigrants o Unassimilateable they might want to assimilate and try their hardest but they can t completely fit in because WASPs see different color of skin or different appearances Formative Wave Migration Formative Wave o Anglo Saxon Protestants or English from England o WASP White Anglo Saxon Protestants o English are not a homogeneous group Anglos Saxons Gaelic tribes Celts Picts Britons Normans Romans Vikings They eventually become white Came from America America was founded by hundreds of different people English chose the term white English way into colorology White pure Godly clean The Immigration of the English o 3 different models of immigration Virginia Model Massachusetts Model Pennsylvania Model o The Virginia Model Virginia Company John Smith Gentlemen Tradesmen Serving Men Libertines John Smith Gentlemen don t work with their hands Tradesmen trade involves having skill Serving Men slaves or servants Libertines people without morals Founding of Virginia Company 1607 Come for money King gave charter King knights gentlemen merchants and other adventures At first this was a failure and then realized they needed people to come serve them so they opened immigration First people who came had money Second third sons primogeniture all family s money goes to eldest son second and third sons got nothing o Kill oldest or go to army for land Indentured servants no money to come so exchange their lives to service for passage over Labor immigrant no money supposed to work but aren t sold to just one person o Forced to US o England empties prisons and sends to America o Kidnap women to become breeders o Convict labor work off their sentence Slave forced to come over contracted for their whole lives o Economically works out better o Serve dominant population o Given no rights Virginia started giving out land Second and third sons come over and buy land with money Gentlemen are citizens of Virginia Colony must have land Laborers have no rights and aren t citizens Laborers save up for land because they were promised it Gentlemen not okay with this Most indentured servants laborers die before their indenture is over Relations with the Natives Very hostile English instantly claim superior position Native peoples refuse to work English pretend they don t exist Most of Virginia Model is laborers Keep laborers working Extending contracts Make land prices more expensive so they cant afford it They have consistent immigration o The Massachusetts Model We shall be as a city upon a hill the eyes of all people
