killed a lot of Irish people 1603 King James I Virginia Jamestown got the SCOTS immigration work force and military force Scots come to Ireland and kill mostly the Irish Catholics 600 thousand killed over 50 years 1607 1650 Scots were Protestant Presbyterian Church no church hierarchy no ceremony Scots also come to Ireland because Scots in 1600s sucks Scots farmer shitty house and had the animals live inside with family gross Only diet of food was oatmeal work in the fields all day repeat every day Paid rent with crops but when crops wouldn t grow they would be kicked off of land Rent on land give food for it Ireland had cheaper rent and better soil Scots were hard workers 1st wave 1603 1611 2nd wave 1630 s drained marshes for more farmland and new crop potato Scots brought to Ireland along with livestock and introduced sheep farming and herding 1650s 1660s 40 000 lowland Scots Presbyterian Frenchmen broken away from the Catholic Church had come to northern Ireland taught Scots how to make better quality wool 1680 s Northern Ireland Scots dominated wool trade threatened to put English wool farmers out of business English had civil war King Charles was beheaded Ruled by someone that was not royalty King Charles children in 1660s came back and reclaimed the throne But the children were not liked by the people of England so they went and found another relative to come rule James II went to France to raise an Army to invade England and reclaim the throne He also became Catholic to piss people off Went to recruit Irish and took his army to destroy the Scots Where the army kills all land and people in the Northern part of Ireland London Dairy where they Scot held out for 105 days then fortified 9 horses were left 1 pint of oats for each person was left English had been putting together an army while he was gone to defeat him 1609 James II was defeated and fled back to France 100 000 Scots living in Northern Ireland trying to rebuild society 1700 English hits them with Woolens Act which means they couldn t export their wool to England Textile mills were all in England Irish wool trade collapsed Scots couldn t pay rent economic depression in Ireland 1714 1719 stems in Ireland dried up no rain for several years so no crops no food to eat 500 000 starved to death Tercentary Act English Law Had to be a member of church of England to hold any position in office All towns in Northern Ireland were Presbyterian all positions lost Only church of England marriages were legal Presbyterian ministers arrested for false marriages the marriages were now living in sin Early 1700s 1775 Scots leave northern Ireland for America called Scots Irish They HATE the British when they Arrive By the end of 1700s 300 000 Scots Irish and lowland Scots living in America Most Scots Irish arrive in Philadelphia largest immigrant point in mid 1700s Land on fringe or backlands no money Squatting find a piece of land in wilderness with no marks claim it as their own unless someone else claims it Way to get land for free Shenandoah Valley n s Carolina Appalachian Mts Etc Great Wagon Road used for trade Indian tribes were a threat continually battled for control on the frontier Scots Irish migrated in families no choice when kicked out of homes in Ireland Several different families built towns Make cash crop rise live stock became middle class by late 1700s early 1800s Scared of being poor thinking of get rich quick schemes to better themselves Didn t want people calling them names Andrew Jackson PA to SC He wouldn t stand for being called names or failure He was the first Scots Irish President 16 years old in American Revolution captured and refused to clean British soldier s boot and was cut on the face with sword Thrived on the frontier Davey Crocket Daniel Boone Revolutionary War allowed Scots Irish to become part of dominant all of south and work their way up British destroyed American Army in South Carolina hoping to dominate all of the south then work their way up British General massacres all American soldiers that were wounded in NC Word gets out to the Scot Irish over the mountains so they help defeat the British against Corn Wallace s Army Force him to surrender in Yorktown Germans Not a collective group until 1871 wasn t a country until then Pennsylvania Dutch sold from dutch forts actually Germans Came during Formative Wave Quaker Religion in Germany so came with people of similar beliefs before American Revolution Pull Factors practice religion without trouble Push Factors disease previous Bubonic Plague immune systems still weakened religious works killed soldiers and civilians between all mini German communities 30 year war 1618 1648 all countries sent soldiers to Germany fighting cost Germany 35 of spirits with folktales Ben Franklin was anti German but started the 1st German language newspapers in colonies Penn Dutch loyalty oaths on English side if in war but British hired people in Germany to help them in war Good immigration Group out of sight out od mind as long as immigration groups stay out of WASPs way they are accepted came with money good Need money to get away from WASPs way from city build forms value of property built fences nice barns gardens cattle beehives honey made money selling crops inc value farms Stereotyped hard working honest protestant middle class had money industrious Largest immigration group to ever come to America 17 of population of US WASPs adopted from German santa clause apple pie pretzel hot
