other races Race the assumption of differences based on real or imagined physical characteristics Racism when you take the belief of those physical characteristics and you believe that a person is inferior or superior to you personally Always seen as black against white America has hated everyone Chinese the Chinese Exclusion Act the Irish worst the Africans believed that Irish were black on the outside Example Thinking that Asians are better than us because they should be good at math or science Certain races are better at sports or dancing Ethnicity people who have something in common with one another Can have language religion or culture in common All or just one Cuban Jamaican Dominican Cannot be American Nationality It is something that you can choose or is something that America chooses for you Hispanic and Jewish Sometimes forced to be called Nativism a dislike of immigrants or a group because they come from another country Based on assumptions Nationality where you were born Where you are a citizen what passport you hold If you change your citizenship But there are complex situations two or more passports 1607 America has been a nation of Immigrants What does the United States do with this information We have a racial and ethnic hierarchies Where they are placed on the hierarchy depends on how different the closer you are to People in power are on the top white anglo Saxons white the higher you are African Americans bottom Asians mid west Changes Money if you have money in America it doesn t matter what color you are If you have no money then you are automatically placed at the bottom Hierarchy can change once you have power As humans we have in our mind of people who are scary or the other and we segregate ourselves Us the term they our opposition The History of Immigration Who comes why and what happens Three Movements Waves of Immigration Formative Wave they formed the United States of America They white anglo Saxons set up how America is going to be They do not consider themselves to be immigrants Puritans pilgrims o 1607 1830 o Who is involved Italians Africans Jews Germans The wasps ignore all these people First Wave o 1830 1880 o Millions of people coming in o Who comes in Irish Germans Chinese Second Wave tens of millions people coming in each year o 1880 1920 o Greeks Italians Checklosvakians Japanese o 1920 pass immigration law Then Don t call it a wave wave o After 1920 because laws are supposed to be passed Why do they come Push v Pull Type of Migration Many do not want to come to America and even want to go back to their own country Push what pushes you out of your country religious persecution famine starvation lack of resources jobs government falling apart dislike you war genocide poverty Pull is what pulls you into another country America jobs safety laws to protect people the American Dream education religious freedom technology health care Involuntary if you have push factors and need to flee country Voluntary completely satisfied with your country but always wanted to live somewhere else How they fit in The process Assimilation give up culture language religion customs food etc and take on the culture that they have migrated to Becoming more American Acculturation immigrant decides they have to fit in a little bit but will keep their cultural identity Speak English in public and speak Spanish at home o If you voluntarily come to the another country o Things that will make you assimilate quicker are job public school system town you migrate to age if younger might not really remember getting married to a citizen Un assimilate able people who are unable to assimilate o Appearance they are not white family does not want them to or language barriers What the United States wants from Immigrants A History of 1609 1960 Dominate form is assimilation Anglo White 1 Anglo Conformity Nativism hatred or rejection of immigrants or other cultures Xenophobia fear of the other anyone who is different from you Actively doing something about it 2 Melting Pot 1960s 3 Cultural Pluralism 1980s all American people jumping into a pot and becoming tan We celebrate everyone s differences Like a salad and mix into a bowl We still can see who is a lettuce tomato croutons Country is better because of different people Love that we have diversity Anglos Saxon Protestants or English Americans Wasps Who are the wasps WASP White Anglo Saxon Protestant o White clean purity and Godly o English and Europeans chose to call themselves white not because of their skin color o Anglo Saxon ethnic backbone of northern Europe Were two Germanic tribes and took over England and Scandinavian Pertaining to a mixture of a bunch of different cultures o Protestant non Catholic Christian Linked back to Martin Luther Anglo Saxon English Who are the English o Not a homogenous group and a mixture of different people o Anglos Saxons Gaelic tribes Celts Picts Britons Normans French Romans Italians even Vikings Scandinavians Norway The Immigration of the English England in 1600 who was going to succeed the throne from Henry the 8th Henry the 8th England was divided between catholic and protestant Religious chaos Queen Elizabeth did not want to spend money on colonization but decided to do something because she didn t want to fail England Trial run was Ireland Definition of Upper Middle Lower Class in England Europe o Upper class most be related to royalty Queen Elizabeth and are landed you must own land Only people who can own land huge estates Every gentlemen never used your hands never worked for a living picked up tools anything educated art speak many languages read Greek and Roman text People to dress them o Middle class not royalty family with money but do NOT own land Doctors lawyers skilled craftsmen educated o Lower class you do not have money Working for royalty Primogeniture first born son inherits everything Land money everything Second Third Sons they get absolutely nothing Two choices father can buy you a mini war or you can go into the church British North America the 13 colonies First colony Jamestown
