Reagan Era of deregulation One of the things we attributed in many ways to a new set of political idea that came in with the Regan Era after 1980 was the deregulation of cable the elimination of what had been called the fairness doctrine a politician has the right to reply to a comment about him etc Upside of deregulation there are more channels more kinds of TV shows and more choices The downside would be that it increasingly defines policy not so much in political terms like you ought to have a certain right to diversity formation we define it more in economic terms like the consumer ought to get to make choices Also less diversity at the local level radio great example but even in TV there is a lot less variation and local innovation and less access for people who aren t wealthy enough to own the networks However now with the internet we see a change in that So there is always a flux going on here in terms of what we think we need to do regulatorly in terms of the technology that enable things to take place the shapes of industry that develop how industries operate and what its doing with the technologies and whether that seems to require regulation or not and the possibilities they re open to people as again technological change takes place
