Sarnof De Forest took Armstrong to court one of longest suits in history He thought Armstrong stole all his ideas He thought he had a chance of winning but then WW1 intervened The federal government froze all suits and stopped all wireless communications David Sarnof and Lee Forst did what they could to satisfy the requirements Sarnof was very successful during the war he became a general manager Lee Forest profited selling radio tubes to the navy He sold exclusive rights to the American television and telephone companies De forest organized 20 companies and driven almost all of them into bankruptcy He vowed to continue his work alone Overtaken by teams of scientists lee de forest refused to see it Howard Armstrong wouldn t see it either He joined the army and went to Paris There he built wireless communications for airplanes and insisted he tests them for himself Armstrong made his second discovery there the Super Heterodyne It captured radiowaves at very high frequencies and combined them with waves with low frequencies to produce totally new waves These new waves were then amplified several thousand times vastly increasing the sensitivity of almost all receivers Sarnof saw the commercial potential of his young friend s discovery Armstrong s radio sets would be a great success For his remarkable invention Armstrong was promoted to Major Armstrong won his suit against de Forest twice Frank Gunther Engineer De Forest failed to describe how the thing operated De forest was again nearly bankrupt
