If you get nothing else get this It s just entertainment is an empty statement ex program 24 the professor does not think it is just entertainment Entertainment doesn t include ideology and advertising which come into our lives and shape us Therefore it is important Saying it is just entertainment is like looking at video games and saying well that s just entertainment We are just now beginning to study video games seriously but it is a little over do frankly Will 100s of 1000000s of young people predictably young men spend multiple hours a day playing video games That s a powerful medium Lots of people are spending lots of time with it We probably ought to understand what it is doing TV is even a longer run medium with much more powerful impacts It is almost as impossible to look at TV and say nah its just entertainment In fact it s taken a while to find a legitimate study for academics We have only really come around in the last 15 20 years as a society taking us seriously Example study they made here came out with they were looking at Brazilian census data and trying to figure out why the birth rate in brazil was going down precipitately fast 5 babies per women in the 60s to 1 in the 80s They found the single thing that was strongly correlated to reduce in children was how long you had had TV in your home They were like what does TV have to do with that In turned out they did an in depth study and they had been modeled or cultivated by that idea that upper mobile families were small Since more families wanted to be more affluent or more upper mobile they begin to have smaller families which is a very powerful affect of television It is kind of hard to look at TV and say it is just entertainment because it is a social institution probably more powerful than Churches for many people maybe more powerful than schools government in many ways and it is a major factor of what we grow up thinking about socialization
