Radio and Payola Rock and Roll saves radio DJ era strong personalities taking over medium and using it to play music Radio and music interacted First person to use the term rock and roll was Allen Freed who was a famous DJ names Moondog Radio begins to be formatted When FM came in it segmented the rock audience There are a lot of hip hop channels music and radio co evolve together because radio is the means to put out the music for people As radio genres evolved so did music and vice versa The talk radio element faded away in 50s or 60s but when FM started again talk radio came back Music DJs become the primary thing the radios did before FM came along Then people get paid to play a record Payola Scandal DJs expected to get paid for playing the records DJs helped people make parties but wasn t really a great job There was potential for abuse of DJs illegal stuff and part of it was the imperative to get records played Wolfman Jack example of a man making him say a love note on air He became really famous but typically DJs got pushed out when nationally formatted programs began to be produced and placed in broadcast stations all over the country Localism Versus National Formatted Broadcasts
