Network broadcasting So one thing that came up with radio is that predictability was really highly desirable If you put things on a random times then you lose the audience and the US commercial industry discovered that early on in the 20s that you need to be able to people leaving over Burns and Allen in their favorite program is on at 5 o clock every Sunday or I am pretty sure that wasn t when it was really on but really need to know exactly what day and time Then they begin to create stars using the film model that already caught on in the teens The film industry discovered early in the teens and then certainly by the 20s that promoting starts for films like early starts like Rudolph Valentino or Gueta Garbo very glamorous and attractive to people not unlike Lady Gaga now that was a good way to promote a new thing new industry new form of entertainment They created starts and attracted people s attention like Jack Benny in Burns and Allen and not only promoted the shows frequently they did the advertising They moved back and forth to Hollywood A lot of the people made movies maybe started in film and then moved to radio or vise versa Film went from silent to talking late 20s to early 30s and suddenly people who spoke well were at a premium A lot of the radio people were charismatic and spoke well Not everybody could work well in both medias Some beautiful some funny so could work well in both media Film studios became more and more involved producing stars and shows Industrial convergence technologies are quite distinct for film or radio and had nothing to do with each other there was a pretty strong industrial convergence around the usefulness of the starts
