Computers military university research labs There is a big computer right there They were started in the 1940s for processing and storing information They were originally started in a military context before they get wide civilian use and The personal computer hobbyists In the 1970s what happens You get your first PC Similar to what happened with wireless radio the first computer started as a tool for hobbyists though going back into the 1970s you get all kinds of people interested in the computer for things like collections science fiction projects etc It is really interesting the way the computer functioned in the 1960s So you have a lot of people interested in what the computer can do to connect people and how the computer can improve on human skills Being able to use a computer instead of a typewriter There is a whole long line about stories about this By the 1980s the computer became more accessible and usable at homes His dad got an apple in 1982 So as time goes on computers become cheaper and cheaper and the cheaper they get the more diffused they get marginal cost It is important because a big part of this class is how industries connect with other industries We have talked about how the film history connected to television The TV industry in the 1980s is afraid of the Internet There is a big fear in the 80s till the present that television networks will be pushed out of the market by personal computers
