Dystpoian views of broadcasting FCC Chairman Newton Minow We had a dystopian view However there was one turning point for TV in its current incarnation the fact that TV is called vast wasteland the networks are publically challenged in a very critical way to do better They make some efforts but what ultimately happened as a result of this critique is that we come up with different forms of TV particularly public television educational TV and the Public Broadcasting System created with govt and foundation assistance helping create a new form of TV an alternative to the vast wasteland an alternative to what people disliked about commercial TV PBS was created for educational instead of entertainment ex Dora the explorer so a place where you see more cultural things Political Regulatory Origins of broadcast regulation Communications act of 1934 Broadcast airwaves are a public resource Broadcasters are trustees of the public good
