Fall and Rise of Radio Networks The original golden age of radio was from 1926 to 1955 when a lot of the programming came up What happened to the radio in late 40s and mid 50s TV both film and radio suffered a crisis A new type of radio was formed at a local scale 1990s saw a growth in syndication of radio talk format Ex Rush Limbaugh another technological change FM radio took over sound in 80s FM became the premium stations and AM looked for something else to do Talk depends on sound quality Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern begin to move to DJs AM Syndicated music begin to replace DJs The last DJ was here in Austin Radio Programming Issues localism vs national formats Telecommunication Act of 1996 Ownership conglomeration drive 1966 Example of horizontal conglomeration that went crazy 1966 we have always restricted previously any single ownership having a number of stations we regulated that and also cleared the channel out of San Antonio Suddenly in 2000 1200 radio stations which is too much It standardized music and probably gave them way too much power
