Issues in Internet Access digital divide Internet diffusion The digital divide addresses the diffusion of broadband internet access into different communities Broadband means open bandwidth Digital divide means broadband access in the US and the world Top graph The developed world there is a clear differentiation between internet users in the developed world vs what would be considered the developing world Second graph only 1 of internet users in 2000 in the world are from Africa Only 2 of Australia 5 Latin America It is very important that the less developed countries have much more limited internet access Broadband penetration What is interesting is that the US has the lower levels of broadband penetration as compared to South Korea 95 in the world Then going down from there a lot of countries in Western Europe Denmark Switzerland Sweden France UK and Belgium For the US it is a relatively small percentage of broadband diffusion penetration Why It is based on wealth or economic income distribution So a lot of the countries it is based on a lot of economic and geographic factors Netherlands it is a small country geographically all connected and the divisions between the poor and the wealthy are not as pronounced So as supposed to US as we all have been hearing a lot about through many media outlets the income divide is pretty slanted and wide Two of the main reasons penetration is lower are socioeconomic status is pretty varied in the US and the US is a big country with a lot of different geographical areas NYC is packed with people then rural areas in Texas and Utah where no broadband penetration Geographic and socioeconomic
