Imagined Communities Benedict Anderson TV allows us to imagine ourselves as one nation One thing a TV does in a big way is that it enables us to imagine ourselves as not only one nation but maybe various kinds of people in the nation Image on the left plane hitting the second tower on 9 11 That brought the U S together in a remarkable way People who had been having political arguments stopped having them for a few days or a week because there was a sense of a common complication or a unification of the country that they found the need to deal with this Benedict Anderson his book is the middle image He saw how economist interest began to use the new technology You had printers who wanted to make money newspaper publishers who wanted to make money you had the formation of nations around a single language and political system and that these forces the media on one hand and then the political system on the other worked together pretty well because the nation would be envisioned by having a common language set of boarders shared political history but it would be spread in way and further envision and share via the media in many cases were private rather than public and that private media which run to make money would have a share in this and this Ex All in the family TV in 60s it was an attempt to re envision what the U S was like and look at current issues as in the 60s Archie Bunker the guy 2nd from right was seen was a nice but conservative guy maybe a little racist and prejudice a certain American guy many are familiar with His daughter s husband was liberal
