limits threats to privacy public sources scrutiny Another threat to privacy comes from government actions The digital age is a reason for this because the government can use the same digital tools that a company would if not more And particularly after 9 11 when the US as a whole threatened by terrorism and decided to lower our privacy protections in order to make it easier to find and catch terrorists Here s a good example of a policy discussion US patriot act after 2 months from 9 11 which enabled an awful lot more direct surveillance on citizens e mails texts intercepting and examining email and even things that are shown in the example Who borrows what books at the library In doing so we remove some protections If you wanted to check someone s email before 9 11 you were required to get a search warrant After 9 11 it isn t so clear In theory the post 9 11 rules are just for terrorism but some crime fighting organizations have started using some of these same tools without going for a search warrant in a way they wouldn t have been able to do before 9 11 There was discussion and decided it was worth renewing the patriot act Are we permanently lowering our privacy protection and increasing surveillance What are the conditions where this might stop
