1 Cassette revolutionized how we record music 3 It was unthinkable to do recordings at home 2 or 3 decades ago Ex recording sessions in Tom Hanks movie about music industry in early 60s called That thing you do about a hypothetical group that became popular and got their first recording session in a church with somebody s uncle and want great recording but good enough to issue as a single Now we have high quality recordings through computers in bedrooms as long as they have the talent to generate the sounds they need from within the computer 4 we challenged the role of music industry in the gate keeping it was hard to get into the music industry without a contract Now people do everything on their own and distribute on the internet music as personal experience individualization and personalization people argue that portable music devices like walkman lead to social fragmentation It was revolutionary in its own way when we all started listening to music together and seeing the music as part of social change Ex going to anti vietnam rallies as a college student as music was an inherent part of the experience they all listened to it together It bonded them together and made them against the war So now as we all listen to music alone when riding buses and listening to iPods you wonder what kind of music are they listening to Are they sharing any of it Now we have much more choice but sharing less with people of our age or our class We have a customized choice like mixed taped playlist etc
