Why Study TV Some students ask them why are you subjecting radio and TV to so much criticism It s just entertainment why study it so hard Why pick it apart Why be critical of it Couple reasons it is a big industry and a number of us will probably end up working with directly or indirectly It is also a huge piece or our economy and particularly a huge piece of economy of our particular future career If you want to understand it and work for it thinking critically of it is quite important It has also played a pretty central social and economical role in American history starting just before WWII and way up through the 50s 60s and now TV tells us a lot about who we are as a nation as genders as ethnic groups as racists and somehow TV is still to a very large degree our eyes and ears on the world even though now a lot of people are shifting their attention particularly younger people to media like the Internet social networks like gaming we are still to a large degree well shaped by the TV we watched as children and our habits have moved away a little bit from TV TV has definitely shaped most of us
