Early programs I love lucy good example of stand up comedy and ensemble comedy moving into TV about when advertising came in Amos n Andy came from radio It was really problematic because it was basically a bunch of white people pretending to be black When it came on radio you couldn t really tell they were doing a good imitation of being black but when they came on TV they were literally the same white actors in black face which was horrific Why not just find black comics and let them play on TV Why bring white comics in black face and pretend to be black White men making fun of black men so a lot of mad people so much stereotype Gameshows also came over onto TV perceptions of television Some critics from Germany who moved to U S to flee Hitler like Frank Horkheimer and Theodore Adorne were very scornful and fearful of the cultural industry of 1950s the massification of culture Newton Mennow the FCC chairman sat back and called TV a vast wasteland He uses the terms idiot box and hoob tube and basically say that the programming wasn t worth much Maybe it was entertaining but in a way that was bad for you
