1927 how did it happen so fast It is hard to say technology take place with commercial music box That was not really technologically figured out Industries or institutions To some degree appeared as a major way to make money The regulations were ambivalent they weren t quite sure what their vision was Their vision changed over time So regulation and government intervention mattered but as it turned out industries and the genres the industries discovered were hugely important Which hist forces mattered the most for radio specifically There was pretty good evidence for the great man theory There were inventors particular businessmen particular programmers who had an idea that seemingly sort of shaped things On the other hand if they haven t had technology to work with the great men wouldn t have been the great men What turning points or key events did they have The great men took advantage of key turning points as possibilities to present themselves Industrial interests Who took over the industry How did the big four cooperative companies develop What were the economic possibilities What was it possible to do in the American economy in the 20s or the teens of the 20th century What did political figures and government regulators want Relating to political economy and the interests of policy making What sort of social and cultural practices were going on What genres have already emerged with the music what genres emerged as new possibilities with radio what was happening with the users the audience the grass roots How did they shape the thing You can make an argument at one point all of these are shaping factors so it relates to the social shaping of technology chapter 2
