Stuart Hall in lecture Visual Representation and the Contemporary World o The saturating medium representation o An Old View Representation as Reflection Distortion of Reality o Meaning 1 Representation to present to image to depict o There was a presentation at first a meaning that was already there and then representing it through media o Meaning 2 Representation also known as political people representing us Standing in for us taking the place of o Representation is the way in which MEANING is given to the things depicted through the images words etc o Gap of representation is between the true meaning of events and the media representation o A New View Representation as Constitutive o The old notion is too literal o Do events in the world have one essential true or fixed meaning Against which distortion can be measured o Example British leader John Major meets with Irish leader John Bruton to discuss the Northern Ireland situation What is the meaning of that meeting It s hard to decide There will not be only one interpretation of what s going in in North Ireland o There is no one true fixed meaning about it o Representation does not measure the process at all o The true meaning will depend on the meaning that people make of it o It has no fixed or true meaning until it has been represented o Representation is part of the event o Reality does not exist outside the process of representation
