50 s TV and Ideology driving or reflecting TV was seen as much more powerful than radio TV constructed itself as a very domestic medium and most programs were about the ideal family life vs the scary outside world Ex Father knew best very patriarchal view of what American life was like TV came in both its programming and hardware very much as part of the post war boom consumer economy and it began to be very political both in terms what people said in the news what politicians said Ex JOSEPH McCARTHY he was a very hard line end communist senator of the era who was crusading against what he saw as the menice of having communists in the government and military and very crusaded very hard to get people get kicked out of Hollywood black listed so they couldn t work in Hollywood which a number of people had major scriptwriters actors etc going to Europe to work because they couldn t in Hollywood because McCarthy succeeded in having them black listed from being able to work So they got people driven out of military and government very crucial era which was brought down by CBS news and several of its key newsmen who had come to task and showed what he was doing deliberately using the medium for political gain and breaking people s lives EX GOODNIGHT AND GOODLUCK example of movie about McCarthy
