Qualities of good marriages and other long term relationshipsCurrent LectureLoving Relationships:- Sternberg’s Triangular Model of Loveo Love is made up of intimacy, passion, and commitmento Intimacy: Affection, sharing, communication, and supporto Passion: Physiological arousalo Commitment: A decision to love the other person and remain with them- If there are only two combinations of the three, this yield 7 types of love:o If there’s only passion, this is infatuationo If there’s only intimacy, this is likingo If there’s only commitment, this is empty loveo Passion + intimacy = romantic loveo Passion + commitment = fatuous love (the bad kind of love)o Intimacy + commitment = companionate loveo Passion + intimacy + commitment = consummate loveDevelopment of Relationships:1. Unilateral mutual awareness (this is where we use surface clues to draw conclusions about what the person is like)2. Surface contact- Lots of initial contact- Self-disclosure is critical here- Assessment of similarity- Assess possibility of deeper relationship3. Mutuality- Deep self disclosure produces greater feelings of intimacy and interdependencyQualities of good marriages and other long-term relationships:- Reciprocal high levels of self disclosure (most critical)- Perception that the relationship is equitable- Complementary personal styles- Genuine mutual liking- Handling of anger- Good sex
