By the end of thecourse you can expect to have learned the major questions and theories within psychology,to have developed the ability to think scientifically about human thought and behavior (thatis to think like a research psychologist), and to be able to apply your knowledge and skillsto everyday life.Course Reading:Required: Gazzaniga, & Heatherton (2006). Psychological Science: The Mind, Brain andBehavior (2nd ed.). Third or first editions are also acceptable, page assignments for readingwill be given for the 2nd ed.1Prerequisites:A passing score on the reading section of the TASP test.Grading:Exams 75% 150ptWriting Assignments 25% 50ptFinal grade will be made up of scores on exams and writing assignments. Make-up examswill be given under extenuating circumstances only. Please come and talk to me early if youthink that there might be a problem.Grades will be assigned as follows:A 93.0 - 100% 186 - 200ptA- 90.0 - 92.9% 180 - 185ptB+ 87.0 - 89.9% 174 - 179ptB 83.0 - 86.9% 166 - 173ptB- 80.0 - 82.9% 160 - 165ptC+ 77.0 - 79.9% 154 - 159ptC 73.0 - 76.9% 146 - 153ptC- 70.0 - 72.9% 140 - 145ptD+ 67.0 - 69.9% 134 - 139ptD 63.0 - 66.9% 126 - 133ptD- 60.0 - 62.9% 120 - 125ptF Less than 59.9% 0 - 119ptScores will be rounded. For example, a 89.95 would be an A- and a 89.94 would be a B+.No extra credit will be given.2Exams:There will be 3 exams, each covering a third of the course material, and a cumulative finalduring the final exam period. Each exam will be worth a total of 25% of your final grade(total 75% after dropping one), and will be graded out of 50 points. Exams will be a mixof multiple choice and short-answer. Half the points will come from the multiple choice andthe other half will come from the short-answer.The best three out of four exam grades will be used in calculating the final exam grade. This allows you to drop an exam grade if for whatever reason you did not perform as wellas you could have. The cumulative final, however, is required and must be passed. If it isnot passed it will be included as one of the three exams making up the final grade and thenext lowest exam score will be dropped. To pass the final you must receive a score of at least35pt out of 50pt or 70% correct. In order to learn and understand the material fully it isimportant to review and revisit it multiple times. The final exam is a chance to synthesizeand test your own knowledge. My hope is that when you are taking the final at the endof the course you will be surprised to realize how much you have learned. The final examwill be held during the scheduled final exam period on Friday, July 9th from 2-5pm in thenormal lecture classroom.Writing Assignments:There will be 5 short writing assignments (2 pages each) covering a variety of topics includ-ing: ethnographic observation, applying psychological theory to your own life, and discussinga journal article. Each writing assignment will be worth 5% of your final grade (total 25%).The writing assignments will be graded out of 10 points. Instructions for the assignmentswill be given in class and posted on Blackboard with the rubric that will be used to gradethem. Papers are due at the beginning of class on the due dates listed. Late assignmentswill be marked off 10% for each day they are late, unless they are late because of extenuatingcircumstances. It is important that writing assignments be completed on time because theyintroduce concepts that we will build upon in lecture.3Lectures:Attendance of lectures is not required, but I strongly recommend attending every class.Summer sessions move very rapidly and it is easy to fall behind. Lectures are invaluableresources to learning the course material and will go beyond what is covered in the book. There will be a variety of in-class activities: classic experiments, discussions, and exampletest questions. If for whatever reason you miss a lecture, obtain a copy of the notes fromanother classmate and come to my office hours to discuss any outstanding questions youmight have.Office Hours:Please visit me or your TA during office hours. This is an opportunity to ask questionsabout the material covered in the book or in lecture, and to discuss any of the requirementsor grading in the course. If you are having trouble in the course please talk to me as soonas possible. If you do poorly or lower than you expected on the first couple of exams, it isimperative that you come to office hours, so that we can figure out the problem early.Research Requirement:In addition to course work, all students enrolled in PSY 301 must fulfill a research require-ment consisting of either participation in psychological experiments as a subject or writinga paper on psychological research.
