Quantification of abnormal sensory abnormalities Team: Jeremy Schaefer – Team Leader Steve Wyche – Communicator Adam Pala – BWIG Colleen Farrell – BSAC Week: November 12 – November 18 Client: Miroslav “Misha” Backonja Department of Neurology School of Medicine and Public Health H6/550 5th floor UW-Hospital Advisor: Prof. Mitch Tyler 2156 Engineering Centers Building 2756 MSC Problem Statement During sensory neurological examinations the physician marks the area of abnormal sensory perception. This area of sensory abnormality needs to be recorded, quantified and analyzed. Traditionally the area of abnormality was traced on transparency, and measured using a planimeter. However, many surfaces of human body are difficult to trace on transparency and for that reason, a better, more user friendly, reproducible method is necessary. Imaging technology using digital devices including cameras provides that opportunity. However, quantification analysis of the recorded image is needed. Last Week’s Goals Find a lab to start gathering points. Order necessary parts to make the stylus (reflective balls or infrared LED’s). Find out about funding and hopefully get parts ordered. Accomplishments Advisor Meeting 11/12. Professor Tyler said that he would do his best to push the administrators to allow us to order as soon as possible. However, when Jeremy went to forward the estimate to him, we had received an email saying that the funding had been approved and were given a contact person to order the parts through. Professor Tyler also told us that we needed to get rolling on the stylus and to make a new spreadsheet with things that we have left to do, who will be doing them, and what the status of them is. Jeremy ordered the reflective markers and the LED’s on 11/12. Jeremy called and talked to Chloe Bodine of the Neurology department and got all the parts ordered for the project on 11/13. The confirmation of the order was received on Monday. Group Meeting 11/17 to discuss what is left to do. We talked about remaining tasks and where they are now. We also talked about what was left to do and what was needed before we could continue with them. Due to the football game and class registrationproblems on Sunday, Jeremy couldn’t make it to get the parts for the stylus this weekend. Adam continues to work on the Matlab interface. He is having problems with the function not calculating the surface area correctly because of the ordering of the points. Colleen still has had no luck with finding someone who will let us use their lab to gather data. Jeremy went and got two LED pen lights to modify for use with the IR LED’s. However, the pens will have to be gutted and we will have to just use the cases. A trip to Radioshack is needed. The markers and LED’s came in on 11/17. The shipment with the cameras came in on 11/18! This Week’s Goals Begin working with the camera system to gather points for testing. Difficulties Heavy exam schedules made it hard to focus on the project this week. Still no word from campus labs about using their equipment. A registration outage this weekend prevented us from getting parts when we would have liked.
