Female Barrier ModelWeek 3: January 30th – February 5th 2009Advisor: Professor William MurphyClient: Marge A. SutinenTeam members: Karen Chen (Leader)Tu Hoang Anh Mai (BWIG)Rexxi Prasasya (Communication/BSAC)Problem statement: in order for the students in the Medical Genetics course titled “Contemporary Issues of HIV/AIDS” to understand and demonstrate the proper use of protective barriers against sexuallytransmitted diseases, the client wishes to have a functional model for the demonstration. The anatomical model needs to be used and re-used, portable, not bulky, easy to store and user friendly. It should also be soft/flexible that is same as the real size model. Last week goals: Since we were not able to meet with the client, the most important goal was setting up another meeting with the client (not a representative) to further understand the problem of the project proposed. The team tried to set up a meeting with the client either on Monday or Tuesday.Summary of accomplishments:• On 1/30, Karen and Rexxi met wit the advisor to discuss the challenges of the project – the client not being able to meet and the client representative did not have a clear vision about the project. The team decided to set up a meeting with the client as soon as possible.• On 2/2, the whole group met with the client and the client representative from 5:30p to 6:00p to discuss the possibility of continuation of the project. The client mentioned that there is not a working model that satisfies her needs, thus she wants the team to construct a new model that has proper anatomical structure. The client specified that the model should have an open that allows the insertion of the female barrier, and the model should also be soft that can be carried around.•On 2/3, the team met with the advisor to update the current status and discuss the next steps. We discussed the purpose and the goal of the client, which is to use the model as a tool to educate the beginner’s class in the proper usage of barriers. We also discussed the future plans for the K-12 outreachprogram, and the structure of the final journal paper.•The team individuals should have researched on some background information regarding the female barrier.This week goals: The goal of this week would be background research on the female barrier placement and the detail anatomical structure of the female reproductive system. Also the team should start organizing the structure of the PDS (planned to work on it on 2/6).Project Challenges: Currently, the team does not face major challenges since the challenge of understanding the project was resolved during the client meeting earlier in the week.
