Physical 3D model of the larynx with moving parts Client: Dr. Sherri K. Zelazny Team Members: Kevin Hanson (BSAC) Nick Ladwig (Communicator) Jonathan Meyer (Leader) Ken Roggow (BWIG) February 23 to February 29, 2008 Problem Statement The goal of this project is to develop a physical 3D laryngeal model, with moving laryngeal cartilage, bones, membranes and muscle, to demonstrate nerve/muscle action and interaction in the larynx for voice, airway and swallowing. The model is to be used as a clinical tool for patient education for improved understanding of the laryngeal mechanism; and to plan treatment based on diagnosis of voice, airway and/or swallowing disorder. Last Week’s Goals • Continue material selection process for muscles • Determine cartilage material • Brainstorm design ideas for preliminary design Summary of Accomplishments • Contacted Rod Lakes regarding piezoelectric materials • Created preliminary design possibilities, each researched independently • Presented design possibilities to client • Began to evaluate preliminary designs with design matrix This Week’s Goals • Continue research on each preliminary design • Use design matrix to select ultimate design Project Difficulties • This was an exam week, limiting the time we could devote to the projectActivities Kevin Hanson 2/22/08 BSAC Meeting 0.50 hr ---------- Researched motors 0.50 hr 2/22/08 Team Meeting 1.00 hr 2/27/08 Mid-Week Team Meeting 1.00 hr Nick Ladwig 2/22/08 Team Meeting 1.00 hr ---------- Researched muscle materials (elastomers, piezoelectrics) 1.50 hr ---------- Contact client & Prof. Lakes 0.50 hr 2/27/08 Mid-Week Team Meeting 1.00 hr 2/28/08 Progress Report 0.50 hr Jonathan Meyer 2/22/08 Team Meeting 1.00 hr ---------- Actuator research 1.00 hr 2/27/08 Mid-Week Team Meeting 1.00 hr Ken Roggow 2/22/08 Team Meeting 1.00 hr ---------- Research muscle function and materials 2.00 hr ---------- Website 0.50 hr 2/27/08 Mid-Week Team Meeting 1.00 hr 2/27/08 Powerpoint presentation background information 0.50 hrProject Schedule Tasks Jan.
