Physical 3D model of the larynx with moving parts Client: Dr. Sherri K. Zelazny Team Members: Kevin Hanson (BSAC) Nick Ladwig (Communicator) Jonathan Meyer (Leader) Ken Roggow (BWIG) February 15 to February 22, 2008 Problem Statement The goal of this project is to develop a physical 3D laryngeal model, with moving laryngeal cartilage, bones, membranes and muscle, to demonstrate nerve/muscle action and interaction in the larynx for voice, airway and swallowing. The model is to be used as a clinical tool for patient education for improved understanding of the laryngeal mechanism; and to plan treatment based on diagnosis of voice, airway and/or swallowing disorder. Last Week’s Goals • Contact Dave & Kevin regarding actuators • Contact Susan Thibeaul regarding materials for cartilage • Further Investigate mimicry of muscle/cartilage systems • Use parameters for muscle movement to select a material Summary of Accomplishments • Met with client and specified which anatomical structures and movements were most vital • Discussed material selection with Prof. Murphy • Researched material selections based upon muscle properties • Studied in detail the structures & movements that will be modeled This Week’s Goals • Continue material selection process for muscles • Determine materials for cartilage • Brainstorm design ideas for preliminary design Project Difficulties• Determine which materials will offer stability and a suitable model of the larynx Activities Kevin Hanson 2/15/08 BSAC Meeting 0.5 hr 2/15/08 Team Meeting 1.5 hr ---------- Studied CT Muscle 1.0 hr 2/15/08 Met with Sherri Zelazny 0.5 hr Nick Ladwig 2/15/08 Met with Sherri Zelazny 0.5 hr 2/15/08 Team Meeting 1.5 hr ---------- Researched elastomers for muscle mimicry 1.25 hr 2/17/08 Research (Anatomy of TA Muscle) 0.25 hr 2/21/08 Progress Report 0.75 hr Jonathan Meyer 2/15/08 Team Meeting 1.5 hr 2/15/08 Met with Sherri Zelazny 0.5 hr 2/21/08 Met with Kevin Turner 0.5 hr ---------- Compiled anatomical dimensions 2.5 hr Ken Roggow 2/15/08 Team Meeting 1.5 hr 2/15/08 Met with Sherri Zelazny 0.5 hr ---------- Research 0.5 hr ---------- Website 0.5 hrProject Schedule Tasks Jan.
