zhiFemale Barrier ModelWeek 4: February 6th – February 15th 2009Advisor: Professor William MurphyClient: Marge A. SutinenTeam members: Karen Chen (Leader)Tu Hoang Anh Mai (BWIG)Rexxi Prasasya (Communication/BSAC)Problem statement: Students in the advance Contemporary Issues of HIV/AIDS of the Medical Genetic department need to learn to demonstrate the proper use of female barriers against sexually transmitted disease by the end of the semester. Currently, an adequate model to show proper use of female barrier is unavailable, thus, instructors have resort to illustrated figure to educate students in this matter. The goal of this project is to design a pelvic model to be used as a teaching tool to demonstrate proper installation of female barrier devices. The model needs to be compatible with over-the-counter female condoms and dental dam. Last week goals: The goal was background research on the female barrier placement and the detail anatomical structure of the female reproductive system. While researching on the female barriers, we will be contacting a specialist in the female barrier education to provide us further information regardingthe barrier usage. Also the team should start organizing the structure of the PDS (planned to work on it on 2/6). We also plan to meet the specialist in the female barrier educator and learn more about female condoms from this instructor.Summary of accomplishments:• The regular weekly team/advisor meeting will be held every Tuesday at 4:15p.• Since the meeting will be on Tuesdays, the progress report will be due every Monday, starting 2/16.• On 2/6, the team has met to discuss the PDS from 12:00p to 1:00p. The general layout of the PDS is complete, and the minor details will be filled in while the project progresses.• Rexxi has contacted the female barrier specialist and waits to hear back; the specialist has replied and agreed to meet with the team on Friday 2/13.•On 2/10, the team met with the advisor to update on the team progress. We talked about start working on the material of the model, which needs to have large flexibility and similar to skin. We were suggested to research into skin elasticity material journal articles. Also, talking to Prof. Vanderby would be another option since he specializes in tissue mechanics. We might contact him in the near future. We were also suggested on creating a list of questions for the female barrier specialist on Friday.•The team has agreed to meet every Friday at noon for the rest of the semester.•On 2/13 at noon, the team met to come up with a list of possible questions for the specialist. The questions include how to use female condoms, their popularity, and current problems about the female condoms…etc.•On 2/13 at 2:30pm, the team took bus #14 to the HIV/AIDS center on John Nolen Rd. to visit the specialist in her office. We went over all the prepared questions and received desirable answers. The specialist, Jenny, also used a current hard clear plastic model to demonstrate the female condom usage. She explained the difficulties, and the desirable improvements that could be made to the new model. Before leaving Jenny’s office, she suggested us to visit a sex toy shop nearby to feel the texture of some current sex toy models. At the same time, she provided us three female condom samples. While visiting that shop, we obtained several brochures on the sex toy materials that would be potentially helpful in designing the model.This week goals: The team should also get together to start a brief brainstorming session regarding the model, continue to research on skin elasticity, and spend individual time brainstorm the pelvic model (based on the suggestions of the specialist).
