I. OverviewA. Exploding Battle Checkers is a take off on the classicboard game checkers. Battle checkers is ver similar in manyrespects to regular checkers, ut adds a few unique twists tothe game. The traditional checkers board consists of 64squares, The battle checkers board consists of only 49squares. The smaller board size adds to the quickness of thegame, the game can be won with jumping only eleven of theopponents pieces. Additionally, Battle Checkers adds somemultimedia effects in the form of sounds and animatedgraphics. This version of Battle Checkers will remain as atwo-player game so users can go head-to-head in an all outbattle of Battle Checkers.II. Game MechanicsA. Overview.1. Battle Checkers is played very much like atraditional game of checkers. Control of the screen isgiven to the player who’s turn it is. The player leftclicks the mouse on a game piece of their respectivecolor , then left clicks on a legal open space to maketheir move. Control of the game is then given to theopponent.B. Camera Position.1. The player will see the game board from thetraditional “top down” view. The board appearssymmetric and all locations on the board remain clearlyvisible during the final animated sequence of the game,the view changes to a “profile” type view, allowing forbetter visibility of the scene.C. User Interface Design.1. The user inter face for Battle Checkers wasdesigned with simplicity in mind.a. Minimal amount of buttons.i. A minimal amount ofbuttons for the user to interact with helps tolessen the confusion of the game.b. Help menu.i. A “drop down” helpmenu is provided on the game screen. Theuser can view information regarding thegame as well as instructions on playing thegame.c. Interactivity.i. All user interactionand input will come via the mouse.ii. Since game is playedexclusively with the mouse, removing allother types of input greatly improves userinteractivity. Once the game is started thereis virtually no need for a keyboard to beused.D. Replaying.1. Upon completion of the game, the user isgiven the option to “Play Again” or “Quit” the game.a. If the play again option is chosen, the game screenwill revert to the opening screen of the game andthe user will begin to replay the game.E. Control Summary.1. Game control for Battle Checkers is givenexclusively to the mouse. Player alternate using themouse to make moves on the game board in theirrespective turns.F. Game Play Details.1. Battle Checkers is a two player alternatingturn based game. The first player to start is the playerwho chooses red, The player clicks on one of therepieces, and clicks on an available “open” black space. Ifthe move is legal, The players piece will be moved tothe free space, if not, the process is repeated withanother piece or “open” space. Game play continues inthis manner until one player has lost all of their pieces.Pieces are lost when a opposing colored pieces are“jumped” over them. The pieces are then removed fromthe board and play is given to the player who was justjumped. Although a player cannot make multiple movesduring one turn, a player can mace multiple jumpsproviding that a legal jump is available for the samepiece that just completed jumping an opponent. Controlof the game is given to the opponent when the “endturn” button is pressed. Game play continues until aplayer loses all pieces of his or her color.G. Cut Scenes.1. Cut scenes are used predominantly in thegame ending screen, and consist of shifting a bitmappedimage around on the screen.2. Additionally, a type pf page flipping isincorporated into a subtle animation that takes placeevery time a piece is jumped. The animation shows asmall brief explosion that is accompanied by anexploding sound effect.H. Storytelling.1. Since Battle Checkers is mainly a spin off ofthe classic board game checkers(which has very little orno storyline to it), battle checkers does not employ anystoryline whatsoever.I. Level Summary.1. Battle Checkers is a two player game.Difficulty is provided by the opponent, so no actuallevels exist in the game. III. Game Elements.A. Items(Data Dictionary).1. Sound.a. Numerous sound effects areemployed through out the game. Sound effectsare of the .wav variety.2. Images. a. All images in the game are eitherbitmapped(.bmp) or JPEG(.jpg).4. Items.a. The checker board is made of an array of picture Boxes that have had a bitmapped picturedisplayed in them. The picture may be:i. A red checker.ii. A blue checker.iii. A highlighted redchecker.iv. A highlight bluechecker.v. A red king checker.vi. A blue kingvii. A black check.viii. A red check.ix. A highlighted blackchecker.x. A series of “exploding” blue checkersxi. A series of“exploding” red checkers.b. The game screen is made of:i. A “end turn” button.ii. A “quit” button.iii. A colored checkerpiece that alternates to show who has controlof the board.iv. Various images tocreate the “wall paper” background of theboard.c. Start Screen.i. Bitmapped imagescreate the start screen, the “start game”picture doubles duty as a button to start thegame.d. Ending Sequence.i. The ending sequenceuses various images moved around on thescreen to create the visualization of ananimated object.ii. As in the start screen,the ending sequence of the game usesbitmapped images that double duty asbuttons to “quit” or “Play Again” the game.IV. Game Progression.A. Setting. 1. The game takes place on a modifiedcheckerboard surface. The images that “wall paper” thegame add to the theme of the game with “battleelements” and “checker elements”.B. Introduction.1. Battle Checkers is introduced to the playervia a “start screen”, where a sound bite is played. Theplayer can then select to play the game.
