CLT3378 Study Guide Exam 2 Reader VI 10 There was a time when people had no fire and could not warm themselves Fire was kept inside a huge white rock that belonged to Thunder who was its caregiver Everyone was afraid of Thunder except Coyote Coyote climbed the highest mountain on which Thunder lives and Coyote challenged him to a game of dice He said if you win you can kill me If I win you have to give me the fire They played with two dice and used a bundle of sticks to keep track of the points scored Coyote was very tricky and would change the scores of the game whenever Thunder would get distracted until the game ended and Coyote won Thunder knew he cheated but could not prove it Coyote had all of his animal friends help him carry the rock of fire away but Thunder was looking to kill Coyote because he knew he cheated Coyote read his mind and knew what Thunder was trying to do so he pulled the outer part of his body off the skin and moved a distance away He changed his voice to make himself sound distant then said to Thunder Here I am kill me if you can Thunder picked up the huge rock containing fire and hurled it at what he thought was Coyote but it was just his skin and fur The rock splintered into millions of pieces and the animals each picked up a piece and ran off They brought fire to every tribe on earth and Coyote told Thunder never to gamble again Raven Create the World Brings light to the World When his son was born he told him he would give Raven was first called Kit ka ositiyi qa yit him the strength to make a world After trying in all sorts of ways Raven finally succeeded although there was no light in his world But someone told him that up the Nass was a large house where someone kept light just for himself In that house lived a rich man and his daughter Raven turned himself into a speck of dirt and placed himself into the cup of water the daughter was going to drink The girl swallowed the dirt and became pregnant The grandfather put moss inside and the baby was born on it The baby was Raven and he would cry point to the bundles on the wall that he wanted Finally the grandfather gave him the one hanging on the end a bag of stars He played with it until suddenly he let it go up through the smoke hole and it went straight up into the sky and scattered itself everywhere Later on he began crying again until he was given another bag He played with it and then let it go through the smoke hole and there was the moon There was only one bag left which was a box that held the daylight he wanted His eyes showed different colors which scared the people and made them thing he was not an ordinary baby Once the grandfather handed it to him the raven cried Ga and flew out with it through the smoke hole Raven Brings Water to the World Raven was told of another place where a man had a large amount of water This man was named Petrel and he owned all the seawater in the world Raven wanted this water because there was none to drink in the world but Petrel slept by his spring and he kept a cover over it Raven came in and tried everything he could to get Petrel to look outside but he was not clever enough When night came Raven tricked Petrel into letting him sleep at his house When he was asleep Raven went outside took dog manure and put it on Petrel s butt Raven then yelled wake up wake up you have defecated all over your clothes Petrel then took off his blankets and went out so Raven took off the covers on top of the spring and began to drink the water After he drunk up almost all the water Petrel saw him so Raven flew away crying Ga Before Raven reached the smoke hole Petrel called to his spirits to catch him Raven ended up getting stuck there and he was white before that time then the smoke turned him black Finally the spirits let him go and as he flew away he dropped some of the water out of his mouth forming rivers and lakes Raven Creates Animals Raven then came to a large town where there were people who had never seen daylight He reached the bank opposite and asked the people to take him across They refused so he threatened to break daylight upon them They questioned him so he opened his box of light that was stolen and then shut it quickly They quarreled with Raven so much that he this time opened the box completely and the people turned into the animal pertaining to what skin they were using So if someone was wearing fox skin they turned into a fox Raven Eats Animals Raven came up to another place and saw boys throwing fat at one another They hit him with it so he swallowed it threw dog manure at them and flew away After a while Raven came to an abandoned camp where there was a piece of jade half buried in the ground He dug it up Far out in the bay he saw a salmon jumping and wanted to get it Raven had to defecate so he quickly left and when he returned he came back with a piece of wild celery and struck the salmon with it Raven then got all kinds of birds to be his servants He told the birds to go after skunk cabbage while he buried the salmon into the ground and roasted it When they returned he had eaten the salmon and put the bones back into the fire and covered them up Raven Eats Animals After finishing the Salmon Raven arrived to a place where Bear and his wife lived The bear cooked a salmon for Raven so after they ate the Raven in return cooked
