describing Gilgamesh as 2 3 of a god This is because his father is human and his mother is a goddess and when his father passed away he was able to become king of Uruk Belet ili makes Gilgamesh s form perfect so he looks like a god but his personality was terrible and he was out of control Gilgamesh did not treat his subjects like humans he was arrogant violent and rude He would assault young women and demand the right to sleep with these women on their wedding nights Because of his ridiculous behavior the people of Uruk began praying to Aruru Nintu to end his oppressing personality Nintu decides to create a man from clay Enkidu but he is missing an ingredient because he is not quite like the other human beings He lived in the wilderness and was more like an animal than a god He is hairy uncivilized and the opposite of Gilgamesh Enkidu would defend the animals in the wilderness by scaring away the hunters This in turn caused a food shortage so all of the people went to complain to Gilgamesh about Enkidu Gilgamesh decides to try and civilize Enkidu by sending a prostitute to go visit him because what she practices is known to be okay since it is a kind of temple prostitution So her and Enkidu have marathon sex for days and nights and it causes him to become more humanized After he has sex with her he loses some of the ideal aspects of his life and becomes rejected by all of the animals in the wilderness so he moves to the city of Uruk When he arrives he sees Gilgamesh being violent and trying to sleep with someone so he tries to be honorable and stops him They then have this huge battle that rages throughout the streets of Uruk and somehow at the end of this battle they become best friends Together they civilize and humanize each other and seem to be more human After this Gilgamesh stops oppressing his people and now begins to help them instead Gilgamesh decides to go on a quest to fight the creature Humbaba He is the giant protector of the Pine Forest but is protected by the god Shamash The reason Gilgamesh wanted to kill him is because he would protect the trees so the people were not able to use the wood to build fires Gilgamesh asks his mother Ninsun for help so Ninsun goes to Shamash for help Shamash then allows Ninsun to give Gilgamesh a weapon which were the winds Humbaba then realizes he can t defeat Gilgamesh so he offers him a bribe by allowing him to cut any tree he wants He begs for mercy and Enkidu said no then they proceeded to kill him As Humbaba is dying he curses them and it is that one of them will die soon After this things start going wrong with the two of them The goddess Ishtar propositions Gilgamesh to sleep with her because she falls in love with him She offered him gifts if he would be with her but Gilgamesh declines because he says everyone of her lovers end up being doomed Ishtar then decides to complain to her father Anu and he gives her something to punish Gilgamesh with for rejecting her He gives her the Bull of Heaven as the form of revenge by attacking Uruk The bull starts destroying the city and Enkidu and Gilgamesh begin to fight it Enkidu seizes the tail of the bull and Gilgamesh kills it using his sword When they kill the Bull of Heaven they killed something sacred and overstepped the bounds of human So the gods have a meeting and decide one of the heroes have to be punished for this by dying They sent Enkidu a disease so he dies by illness Gilgamesh is overwhelmed by grief so he goes off into the wilderness tears off his clothes and wears animal skin and behaves the way Enkidu used to He begins to worry about the fact that he too is going to have to die one day So he decides to go on a quest by himself to stop this from happening by becoming immortal so he won t have to die the way Enkidu dies So Gilgamesh goes on a journey across the world and gets to the very boundary of the world in order to reach the ocean He passes through magical lands with bizarre creatures He passed through Mt Mashu which is guarded by scorpion men He ends up crossing it and travels through a dark valley until he reaches the other side of the mountain He then arrives at the land of living
