events of the frame narrative of the Thousand and One Nights which we did NOT read the frame narrative features Shahriar and Scheherazade i Buluqiya is a king and his father is dying Before he dies his father tells him to check all of their possessions He does and finds an old gold box that has a parchment in Greek on it showing how old the box is because Greek was no longer a language Parchment tells of the ring of prophet Sulaiman It says that when Adam was expelled from the garden the angel Eden gave the ring to Gabriel The ring gives the holder the power of over all human being essentially giving god like powers Says how the ring is not easy to find as one has to cross the Seven Seas without sail but by walking on it If a person wants the ring the have to get magic plant sap and put it on their feet so they can walk across the waters To find the said plant you have to go to the Queen of the underground Once you have the ring you have to go to the Fountain of Life and drink from it to be god like as the fountain gives you beauty youth wisdom and immortality The sage Affan must serve as a guide across the waters Yamlika gives Affan and Buluqiya the magic plant but tells that that getting the ring is a bad idea and offers them an alternative plant that would give them eternal youth They deny it Buluqiya and Affan travel over the Seven Seas crossing fantastic landscapes They go to the Isle of the First Seas to find that all of the trees are covered with brilliant gem stones Then they go to the isle of the seventh sea and find a fruit tree They go get fruit from the tree and a giant comes out and tells them that they will not eat from the tree The tree is ii actually the tree of knowledge as the giant says that Adam had eaten from it On the isle of the seventh sea they find the tomb of Sulaiman Affan goes to get the ring off the dead body of Sulaiman and when he does Buluqiya says a spell and dust goes everywhere making Affan scared Buluqiya at a loss as he doesn t have his god and doesn t know what to do In second half of Tale of Buluqiya not in Reader king of Jinn the king of the Genies takes Buluqiya off island and Buluqiya goes onto a completely new adventure In the Sassanid Empire Shahriar is the sultana and the Sassanid king One day he catches his wife the Sultaness coming adultery He gets so mad that he gets her killed He doesn t get over it though and becomes very angry with all women in general He starts to go around and picking women to marry to just take their virginity on their wedding night and then kill them the morning after The vizier s daughter Scheherazade or Shahrazad decides to volunteer to marry the sultan with the purpose of putting a stop to the killing of women leaving her father begging for her not to do it Scheherazade comes up with a plan She marries the sultan and after they sleep together she starts telling him a story and doesn t finish it purposely So the next morning instead of killing her he says that he s going to keep her around so she can finish the story Instead of just finishing the story and stopping Scheherazade starts to tell another story doing the same thing as before and not finishing it She repeats this process for 1001 nights After the one thousand and one nights the sultan has been transformed by the stories and decides to pardon Scheherazade saying that he is no longer going to kill her or any other women 1 Scheherazade as the hero in the story 4 Compare the beginning of creation in Vedic Norse and Egyptian accounts What is the first element of the cosmos
