Hist 105 4/24/19Two parties operating by 1860 Democrats and Republicans; Wig party had died. Democrats assembled in Charleston South Carolina – many believed it would be Stephen Douglas to be Candidate many Southern Democrats are against Stephen Douglas. Dred Scott Decision; Southern Rights slavery is legal in all U.S. Territories, but Stephen Douglas said that the Dred Scott Decision didn’t matter. If local government didn’t support slavery, then there is nothing they can do. National Slave Code in the territories, National Police Force must be created to enforce new policy deals. Choose new candidate; Breckinridge for second candidate of democrats then there was no other candidatesJames Buccan can’t do anything (viewed as babysitter) Abraham Lincoln takes leadership, won’t force south to come back to the Union but also wont enforce Dredd Scott Decision. Lincolns closest advisor is William Henry Stewart, Compromise of 1850 – Higher Law Speech. Secretary of State; Masterful Inactivity. Key to resolving this problem is keeping the Upper South still in the Union. Need for Abraham Lincoln to physically threaten the south in order to get the Upper South to succeed and join the Confederacy. South Carolina wants to provoke the crisis; Fort Sumpter Charleston Harbor; South Carolina wants the fort to surrender – President Abraham Lincoln wants to send supplies and tells them to Stand your ground. When the supplies are exhausted, they surrender, but South Carolina gets impatient and reduce the Fort to rubble and Abraham Lincoln calls for 75,000 men to attack South Carolina. Imminent threat of war that results in 4 of the upper southern states to succeed. Upper South was home to most of the yeomen farmers, supported slavery as a system of controlto keep African American in their place. Opposed slavery as a foundation as a system of elite rule. Slave holding elite introduced policy of conscription, non-slave holding yeomen are fighting year in a half they begin to withdraw their support. Southern armies fade away into nothing 3rd fall 2/3 of the souths soldiers were gone. Robert E. Lee 1861 best soldier had every produced whole life is US Army. “Model Solider” Virginia was more his country than the US. Principle allegiance was to their
