Hist 1052/4/19Only 20% people supported the War for independence, 10% of the population supported the Royals, the rest of the 70% were fence sitters. Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense to encourage people to join the war for independence and reiterated the fact that if didn’t help they could be executed for not supporting the crown in the first place. Create the strongest argument as possible, real option idea of reconciliation with the crown; 1776 tried to have a more centralized control over the Americas – old relationship could be restored. America was supposed to be a copy of England, but it was increasingly becoming different and a misconception was being formed. America was becoming a very diverse society compared to England. Scottish and Irish come into America as redemptioners, bring in belligerent attitude toward authority – natural liberty.
