Hist 105 1 23 19 Search for a North West Passage through the Americas James Town was just a naval stop for privateers to land They didn t work in James Town they were lazy Absent of effective leadership or government People in James Town didn t think that they would be staying long 36 were gentleman didn t perform physical labor Many called themselves Capitan bullied Natives took 6 highly specialized craftsmen wine maker jeweler and perfume maker etc The rest were indentured servants poorest household workers 7 put themselves into indentured servitude Impromptu leadership provided by John Smith was lost when injured didn t have actual governor until Spring of 1667 Brough a peculiar work ethic to Americas not enough work for everyone Better for all people to have some work vs to only having a couple people doing a job They weren t used to doing a lot of work due to the recession Indentured servant who worked really hard received the same amount as what another one did Indentured servitude is working for up to 7years but you get to keep half of the economic labor you make through the 7 years You ll get 50 acres of land and a good mustang Instated Martial Law House of Burgesses 4 000 English men to get to go to James town in 1618 but the population was still 1 000 mortality rate is 80 in 1622 the Natives go to war tried to drive them back into the sea In 1624 Virginia Company stripped of their title operated as a royal colony James Town didn t die out because they found out about tabaco small crop was grown and harvested and by the mid 20s tabaco boon happened It began to start off as a rich mans luxury but also a poor mans luxury Labor is key you could make more money in one season than a laborer could make in a year if you grew tabaco Goal was get rich in Virginia and get out before you die And to get as much labor as you can before laborers die Everyone is living in rundown conditions since they are not planning on staying long in Virginia Tabaco is a major factor in where the migrants determine where to live in Virginia Trading ships along the rivers plantations built along river side due to easy access to transportation of goods 1630s 1640 and beyond people begin to start to live longer and women start to move into James Town They began to start to adopt native agriculture spend land and conserve labor Open land so that the sun could reach the ground Girdling trees removal of trees cut a deep ring on tree As the foliage on top of the trees die it opens up the ground System of land rotation labor is in short supply can wear the land out Open land into park like pastures for livestock little labor is required to take care of the animals due to the fact that they are semi wild
