HIST 1056/24/13- Republic of Texaso Created by Revolution of 1836o Jackson recognized Texas a year latero Moses Austin lost all money in Panic of 1819o Saw money in Texas and offered Spain to bring people to Texaso Austin ran into Vogul, Baron de Bastrop and Governor agreed to plano Land agreement: received more land with more laboro Land prices were generous at 12 cents an acre versus US at $1.25o Mexico became independent so Austin had to renegotiate land agreement- Treaty of Cordoba 1821o Independence of Mexicoo New government opposed slavery but allow Anglos to bring themo Constitution of 1824 New Mexican constitution after several changes in power Empowered states with weak federation Anglos liked land price, converting to Catholicism not enforced- Tejaso Texas wanted separate permission for slaveso ¼ of population enslavedo In 1826 small uprising Edwards, another land guy, claimed republic but ended by forceo Slavery illegal, Anglos claimed not slaves just 90 year indentures- Spaino 1829 Spain tried to retake Mexicoo Were defeated by Santa Annao Mexican president tried to empower central government and lower state controlo Halted emigration from the US to protect self- Santa Annao Made coup because didn’t like Mexican change and became presidento Texas allowed to do many things other states could like trials…o Abolished constitution of 1864o 11 Mexican states started revolutiono Defeated Sacatecas and led army north to Texaso Claimed would become independent unless Mexico returned to constitution of 1864- Alamoo Siege of Alamo lasted 13 dayso Mexicans executed small group that surrenderedo 3 people left alive: woman, child and black mano Claimed independence during this battle- San Jacintoo Santa Anna split army 3 ways and chased Houstono Houston won the battle- Conventiono Created constitution and that included joining USo Wanted to join US not create long standing republico US was concerned about second Seminole war and didn’t want to defend Texaso Texas would enter as a slave state, concerned many- Republic of Texas 1836 – 1845o Mexico never recognized Texas as independento In 1840 largest Comanche raid on Texas due to killing Chiefs who wanted peaceo Since Houston was refused by US they called on Britain for protectiono Texas asked New Mexico to join them and were arrested and sent to Mexicoo Sent an invasion and some Texan troops chased and were captured and sent to Mexico- 1844 Electiono Polk (Dem) v. Clay (Whig)o Tyler leaving told congress to add Texas and take on debtso Senate shot it down as election grew o Polk won which signified national mood wanted to annex Texaso House passed and Senate passed by one voteo US would settle boundary disputes- US – Mexican War 1846 – 1848o Mexico claimed Nueces river as boundaryo US claimed Rio Grande as boundaryo Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo 1848 ended war o Mexico ceded large land to California from Texaso Congress attempted to halt slavery with a provision that disallowed slavery in lands received from
