Hist 1054/10/19Slavery in the territories; Wilmot Proviso – slavery would be prohibited in any new territory acquired from Mexico, general idea that Lincoln and the Republican party will adopt, congress can determine if new states free or slave. Extension of the Missouri Compromise extend the line on the 36 30’ longitude latitude line Northward free states southward slave states. Southern rights, slaves are an object of property thus they can be taken with their owners to where ever they wanted thus slavery is open to all western states. Popular Sovereignty; actual settlers of the western states should be the one to decide whether if their states should be free or slave.Matter of sectionalism, difference between North and South becomes more intense – Slavery in the westmatters because of Manifest Destiny – looking for second chances; forced into wage labor due to the Market revolution; place that you could get back what really mattered before wage labor. Slavery in the west mattered because the west mattered so much. Popular Sovereignty could lead to different outcomes of if a state would be slave or free.When do you let a state make the decision of popular sovereignty and how would it affect the outcome? If you took the vote in the early creation of the state, most of the people would be non-slave owning people mainly from the North and then yeomen from the south. In the end it is given to the courts to decide if the states should be titled as a slave state or free state. Dred – Scott decision; Presidential election of 1848 – opportunity for voters to choose one the four options to stand behind. New party – Free Soil Party; Wilmot Proviso party third party only going to exist during the 1848 election give rise to the free Republicans and Lincoln. Jackson Democrats shortly become the Southern Rights party, stand behind the principle of popular sovereignty. Democratic Wigs – run a general in 1840 William Henry Harrison – 1848 Zackery Taylor takes no position on slavery. Zackery Taylor wins and doesn’t take on the issue of slavery. Boundary crisis, West Texas – fighting with settlers in New Mexico. Takes sides with New Mexico but the Texas settlers disregard Zackery’s command to back off. There might have been armed conflict between Feder Army and Texas could have sparked civil war. Zackery Taylor in 1950 July 4th possibility that the fruitwas laced with arsenic and could have been murdered. Just drank too much and ate too much and “blewup” was not poisoned. Compromise of 1850; January of 1850 Henry Clay; five major polices – admit California as a free state, organize the rest of the territory on the principle of popular sovereignty, assume the debit of the countryof Texas in return US take claims of Colorado and other Texas areas, end domestic slave trade in Washington D.C., creation of a new fugitive slave law.
