A Changing America, 1830-1860- Population Growth Population grown due to birth rate and better hygiene. But the main source of population growth was form immigrants.o Immigration and Urban Growth Number 1 ethnic group is German, most prominent. More than the English. Huge wave of immigration. Mainly Irish and German immigrants. This means a high increase in Catholics. You see a rise in population in cities. Begin to see urban growth. South is stuck in time at this time period. The North is taking off. Most represented ancestry is German. Mostly agrarian despite growing cities.o Nativism See a rise in Nativism.  Fear and concern over the increase of immigration. There is an anti-immigrant movement. Argue that these new immigrants are racially inferior.  They argue that they are schwuieng and corrupting American politics. Believe they are easily manipulated. They believe they are manipulated by politicians who will give them alcohol, food, and stuff. Believe these immigrants are stilling jobs from Native Americans, Americans born here. Believe the Catholics will be more loyal to the pope in Rome and are controlled by the pope, then they’re to the American government. Believe they bring radical ideas. Concerned because of the political ideology differences. Get the Native American Party or the “Know Nothing” Party.  54’ is the height of nativism, with the “know nothing” party get the most votes ithas in the past.- Corporations Begin to see early forms of corporations due to legal advancements made.o General Incorporation You fill out a small application and pay a fee. If everyone gets equal profits, then you have more time for freedom and to enjoy life. They all failed:- None of them made profit.- They evolve to hierarchy. - Reform Movementso Public Health and Sylvester Graham Sylvester Graham was an advocate for public health. If we are collectively healthy as a whole, then less money has to be spent on it. Had weird ideas about sexuality. We should all bathe on a regulate abasis.o Public Education and Horace Mann Horace Mann advocated for tax supported public schools. Not matter your class or wealth, every child should have a basic education. Only wealthty people who could hire a private tutor could get education. Wealth re-distrubtion. First secretary of the Massachustettes boar dof education.
