HIST 105 6 11 13 Pennsylvania o Quakers are associated with antislavery and religious freedom and Pacifism Split over slavery and later over use of violence to stop it o Founded by William Penn who held slaves and was a Quaker o New England colonies were more uniformly religious o Middle Colonies had more religious tolerance Carolinas o South Carolina was originally Charles Town o English Colony settled by English from Caribbean and brought crops o Brought in large numbers of enslaved Africans for plantations o Spanish became concerned and built Castillo de San Marcos to protect St Augustine o As Charles Town became populated slaves began escaping to St Augustine o Spain made a decree of sanctuary and freed slaves that escaped to St Augustine o Freed slaves could join militia to protect St Augustine Georgia o Established by English without slaves in 1736 o In between Carolinas and Florida used as slave buffer o Couldn t get enough labor and in 1752 slavery was introduced Stono Rebellion o Slave rebellion in 1739 outside of Charles Town o 20 enslaved Africans gathered near Stono River o Killed 2 weapon shop owners and armed themselves o Led by Jemmy for freedom in Florida o Group increase to over 100 enslaved and slaughtered many white people Fort Mose o Black militia guarded the only dry road the rest was swamp to St Augustine o Spanish built it for the freed slaves o War of Jenkins Ear 1738 1742 English defeat at Fort Mose in 1740 70 English defeated by African soldiers o Situation of enslaved is Constant Resistance Great Awakening o Jonathan Edwards and George Whitfield o Appeal to a personal and emotional connection with the divine o The differences weren t between North and South but East and West o Went away from structure in the west o Slaves would worship with their masters in their churches more westward o Indians began to reject western culture John Locke 1632 1704 o Founder of Royal Society of Natural Knowledge o Secretary to Corp that created Charles Town o Believe man had natural rights to life liberty and property o Government should be made to protect property o Government was agreement between government and governed not coercion Spanish Treasure o Spanish collected so much silver that it inflated the European economy o At one point tobacco equaled its weight in silver Mercantilism o Colonies were made for economic benefit of mother country o Navigation Acts Colonies are not allowed to trade without permission Motherland dictated amount traded how it happened and what route o British navy took tall trees o Put these in place but tended to not enforce them o Went from command economies to market economies o Price revolution oversupply rent on land and no fixed prices
