HIST 105 6 27 13 Post Mexican War o Now US owned land from Atlantic to Pacific oceans How US is today o Begins to divide US into north and south o California part of US Conscience Whigs v Cotton Whigs o Eventually antislavery Whigs and democrats joined and created Free Soil Party o Didn t care about ending slavery just wanted no more slave states 1848 Election o Still not split entirely into north and south o Taylor elected and died in office replaced by Philmore Aster o Became richest man in America due to fur trading o Created tension in US and Britain o Led to Oregon treaty Sutter o Was a Spanish citizen that was sold a Russian fort Fort Ross o Created Sutter s fort in sacramento o Found gold in 1849 caused a gold rush to California o 32 000 crossed continent on foot o Went from 18 000 non indians to 100 000 non indians o Shipped lots of immigrants from Mexico Germany China France California o Lots of Gold but nothing else o A super profitable business was selling supplies to miners o Discoveries of silver in Nevada brought more people o Great increase in population allowed California to become state Compromise of 1850 o California enters as free state o Texas gives up of New Mexico for 10 million o New Mexico Utah organized without slavery o No more slave trade in US o Fugitive Slave Act added rewards penalties for assisting or preventing capture of slaves Clearly defined what should be done for or against slaves for slave holders Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1853 o Created multiple articles for newspaper later combined to Uncle Tom s Cabin o Published as novel in 1852 caused sensation in north and Europe o Portrayed both sides of slavery stated it was cruel but what could you do about it Manifest Destiny o Incentives to get land were strong and many Americans started west o Multiple routes had to be taken to feed animals grass o Needed 300 000 food per person on trail o Conestoga large wagon took 6 to 8 animals to move and carried 6k lb o Schooner smaller version that was easier to pull carried 2 5k lb o Used plateaus and other large rocks as land marks due to flat ground Mormon Trail o Salt Lake City hosted Mormons o Later fragmented over polygamy and those against polygamy moved away from Utah o He moved out to Utah to escape US but 2 years later Mexico ceded Utah to US o Proposed state of Deseret created for Mormons US limited size o President was suspicious of Mormons and send new governor to Utah o Mormon leader claimed President would die and go to hell for bothering them Utah War o Salt Lake City was resupply point to people travelling west o US sent troops because of Moron claim o Local Mormons attack a wagon train and over 100 people died o Utah received statehood after renouncing legal polygamy Donner Party 1846 o Headed for Spanish California from Illinois o Got caught in Sierra Mountains in Nevada and cannibalism happened some survived
