HIST 105 6 19 13 American Colonization Society o Encouraged manumission of slaves o James Madison and Henry Clay are members o Eventually made Liberia to free Africans from US o Africans disagreed due to poor trip and not knowing land or language o This implied blacks and whites couldn t live together First Seminole War 1816 o After victory in New Orleans Andrew Jackson was head of US southern command o Next year fought Indians in southern Georgia o Africans and Indians were escaping to Spanish Florida and bred into Seminoles o Negro Fort with 300 blacks and 300 Indians led by black run aways settle near there o Jackson attacked and blew up fort killing over 400 Adams Onis Treaty o Allowed Florida to be purchased from Spain o It defined border of Louisiana purchase and Spanish territory o Defined border made negotiations easier with Spain o Took long time to sign due to Spain trying to convince US to not support revolutions o Agreed to transport Spanish troops to Cuba John Q Adams used fact that didn t have to feed troops to get cannons Missouri Compromise 1820 o Missouri asked to become a slave state and this caused debate in congress o Congress was wondering if they should halt the growth of slavery o Missouri was added as slave state and Maine added as free state o Created line where slaves would be below line and no slaves above line Antebellum Period 1820 Civil War o Can start seeing country splitting with arguments over the Missouri compromise o Southern country was benefitting monetarily and all US enjoyed cheap product o Cotton became very important and whites relied on slave component Monroe Doctrine o Response to all the new nations being created through rebellion o European nations should not interfere with American business and vice versa o Europeans accepted due to benefit of neutrality on open seas Corrupt Bargain o John Quincy Adams won 1824 election o Jackson had most votes but Henry gave Adams his support so Adams won o Election never decided this
