Hist 1052/1/19Covenant of Grace to Covenant of Work, Antinomianism. Most Puritans believed in Covenant of Grace, salvation is a gift from God – in no way is it earned. Some Christians mostly Catholics believed in Covenant of Work, salvation can be earned through hard work.The pace of Puritans was rapidly heading to a religion of a Covenant of Work, pastors in Massachusetts charged with preaching a covenant of work by Ann Hutchinson. Holy Spirit of God can look at the face of anyone and determine if people saved or not. Put on trial for heresy, given trial in assembly of the most learned people. For 2 days they questioned her, in hopes to trip her up to kick her out. Could not find anything wrong in her beliefs. John Winthrop was exasperated by Ann Hutchinson, Ann Hutchinson started to talk said she knew she was going to be questioned. Said that God talked to her daily. Guilty of heresy. Killed by native Americanson the way to New York after being banished. Quakers, every individual had an inner light, to find salvation follow the inner light and where it guides you. Full of themselves, they were right everyone else is wrong. Puritans confronted by Quakers said thatthey are there to save them from darkness. Quaker missionaries were eccentric, on Sunday they would burst into the church stark naked and sing and praise god draw attention to themselves. Salem Witch Craft/ trials. First American born generation of puritans by 1660 after founding had become adults, but remain unconverted. Incapable of becoming church members, could not participate in civil government. Became more secular and became more individualistic didn’t really contribute to the city on the hill. Measuring success more on profit for themselves than for the greater good of the city. In ability of the children to obtain conversion. Half-way covenant – law that sought to address the adult children who remain unconverted, gives them a partial membership to the church. Gives them the right to present their children to be baptized but doesn’t give them full membership. 1662. National Covenant; individuals were punished by God, most individuals were destined for hell. Communities were dealt with in the present, afflict communities with natural disasters or other events. 1660 civil war was over. Major Indian war King Philips war 1676 surrounding area of Boston was saved. Devastates much of Massachusetts, livestock disease, hurricane. Signs that god was angry with the Bay. People began to question themselves lose confidence. 1684 Charter is taken back by the King, few years later established dominion of New England. Try to control American in ways that was not possible before. Governor sent to reside over area, suspends local government. Enforces regulations. Brings Anglo church with governor Salem Village Massachusetts, contortion of bodies blamed it on witchcraft full blown hysteria. Over 100 individuals were accused and imprisoned for witchcraft and 20 were executed and 1 was tortured to death. Citing words of Jesus Christ before his death and jolted the hysteria.
