HIST 105 6 25 13 Population Southern Whites o Planter 2 US 3 south 20 or more slaves o Small planter 3 US 5 south 10 to 20 slaves o Yeomen 40 US 67 south No slaves economically independent o Plain Folk 15 US 25 South Didn t really own land worked for others o All lived amongst one another and helped each other o Less emphasis on education in south Labor Systems o Gang System Labors in fields working en masse from dawn to dusk o Task System Define to work force task for the day Ex Dig Drainage ditch fencing Once you finish you are done Slave Family Life o Marriage not legal o Families were broken up by sales o Became extremely difficult for blacks to become free o Free blacks could marry and pass freedom to children could own property Slave Resistance o White southerners were highly armed in order to keep control o Different uprising but many slaves just attempted escape o Working slow breaking tools Feigning ill arson food poisoning o Virginia Military Institute and Citadel built to prevent slave uprisings o Punished by whipping branding didn t want to maim cause still their profit o Slavery was against American system of freedom and democracy o Impulse to Christianize slaves Slavery Effects of Women o Mary Chesnut Kept huge diary of southern life o Men became egotistical and aggressive treated women similar to slaves o Slaves and women needed guidance and protection and should show deference o Adapted a Patriarchal system assumed care is needed for childlike people o Considered anyone not white male father to be inferior Churches and Politics o South split over slavery claimed god wanted separate races o Baptists claimed it was against god to separate the races o Whites in north began resenting slave owners political power o o o Whites in north still resented blacks Pre Civil War most politicians were slave owners Slaveholders attempted to halt all peoples liberty to keep their slaves
